A decoration allowance is a payment given to a tenant for one of the following reasons:

  • a new tenant going into their new home
  • following major repairs or programmed works within their home e.g. re-plastering

The Council decides how much the payment will be by calculating it on a room to room basis.

The decoration allowance is issued in a voucher form that tenants can exchange for goods in most DIY stores. (NB this only applies for goods classed as decoration materials.) The voucher must be used within 6 months of issue.

How can I apply for a decoration allowance if I have major/programmed works?

To apply for a decoration allowance for major/programmed works you must put your request in writing to the Council detailing the following information:

  • Your name
  • Address
  • Reason why you are requesting to receive this payment

Once we receive your request we will write back to you within enter amount days of receipt detailing their decision.

You have the right to appeal against the decision via the appeals procedure within enter amount days of notification.
